Last week’s blog post identified the Quarantine 15 weight gain as a real thing.
It described how we can fall into the trap of using food or drink to buffer against negative feelings. Especially as we try to find our footing in these uncertain times.
I think we could all agree that we’ve experienced a decade’s worth of negative feelings crammed into a few short weeks during this COVID 19 pandemic and the havoc it’s wrought.
Let’s face it, even if you resolved to lose weight in 2020 when you committed to your New Year’s Resolutions several months ago, no one could have anticipated the downward spiral the world has taken during this global health crisis.
No one could have predicted the onslaught of negative emotions we’d feel as social distancing, isolation, sickness, loss and fear have descended upon us.
And those of us without the skills to manage our minds, fall prey to all the misery our brains serve up. It’s no wonder we turn to food and alcohol to calm our overwhelm and anxiety.
Even in the midst of the pandemic, weight loss is still doable.
As a certified Life and Weight Loss Coach, I know this is true.
I have led clients on this journey, even during the pandemic.
Now, if you’ve got the kind of skeptical brain that tells you you’ve missed the boat on weight loss or that it could never happen for you, I’ve got good news.
You’re wrong. There’s a good reason you shouldn’t believe everything you think.
Your perfectly healthy brain naturally skews toward negativity.
Your brain is designed to keep you safe and secure above all else.
Since the days of our cave-dwelling ancestors, one of it’s primary functions is to scan the horizon for danger. How else could we stay alive long enough to procreate and insure the survival of our species?
It’s natural default is to worry about all the things that could go wrong. It conjures up scenarios all day long designed to keep you out of harm’s way.
Our brains have a built-in negativity bias that causes us to pay more attention, or give more weight, to negative experiences or feelings. Even over neutral or positive ones. Even when they’re seemingly inconsequential, we still tend to focus more on the negative.
It’s your brain’s job to offer you reasons and explanations about why you shouldn’t rock the boat or challenge the status quo.
It tells you that making changes could be too big a risk to tolerate, that it’s way better to hunker down and stay put in the modern day “cave” of your life.
But challenge your brain you must to lose weight!
When it comes to weight loss, do any of these reasons why you can’t lose or maintain sound familiar?
- I’m too old.
- I’ve been over weight for too long.
- I’m tired of trying.
- I’ve tried everything and nothing works.
- I can lose weight but can’t ever seem to keep it off for long.
- I have an auto immune disease.
- Food is love.
- Food tastes so good.
- Alcohol takes the edge off.
- I deserve pleasure.
- My willpower is practically non-existent.
- I don’t have time work out.
- I hate exercise.
- It’s too much trouble to watch what I eat.
- Dining out is how I socialize and I can’t wait to eat out in restaurants again!
I love working with skeptics on weight loss goals.
If you recognize yourself in any of those reasons, I’m the coach for you.
It doesn’t take willpower to lose weight.
It takes learning the skills to manage your mind and an understanding of the bio-chemical mechanisms of metabolism and the neuroscience of brain function to assure success.
